A broad spectrum of research institutions
The Thuringian research landscape thrives on active collaboration between the various stakeholders of the scientific community and the economy. First-rate academic and research institutions form the foundation for the region’s scientific excellence. These include the Free State’s nine institutions of higher learning, extramural institutions run by prestigious German scientific organizations such as the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer research organization, the Leibniz Association, and the Helmholtz Association, as well as research institutions sponsored by the Land. The application-oriented R&D landscape is also supplemented by a slew of research institutes and development-service providers with close ties to the economy that specifically cater to the requirements of Thuringia’s small and midsized enterprises (SMEs).
